The Garden Club of Greater Baltimore

Mission Statement & History:
The Club was founded in 1958 (as The Men's Garden Club of Baltimore) to promote the appreciation of gardens, strive for higher gardening standards, promote civic horticultural activities, enhance the membership's interest and knowledge in public and private gardens, and to develop comradery and friendship among gardeners. Ten years ago membership was opened to women and the club name was changed to The Garden Club of Greater Baltimore.
Today, the Club meets on the fourth Monday of most months at 7:00 pm in the Cylburn Arboretum Mansion House. Meetings are highlighted by guest speakers whose presentations are of educational interest to the membership. There are Club sponsored garden tours and picnics during the summer. We are a major participant in "Market Day", the fund raising plant sale hosted by the Cylburn Arboretum Association. The membership is a very friendly group, open to all new members who share an interest in gardening and want to share their gardening joys and plants with new friends. Annual dues are $12.00. New members should call Bob Berenhaus (Membership Committee) at 410 484-1297.
CLUB NEWS:
Club Photo of the Month: At the January meeting, Mary Pope & Michael Pusin represented the Club and presented a donation to Bill Vondrasek to be used as part of the Cylburn Arboretum Association Educational Center Building Project. The Garden Club of Greater Baltimore will continue to help The Association as much as possible.
Next Meeting:
Date: Monday, April 27, 2009 7:00pm at the Greater Baltimore Board of Realtors Building. This building used to be the home of AAA of MD. It is located on Bellona Ave. in between the Charles St. Roundabout and the entrance to the Beltway. If you need further instructions, call Michael. When the construction at Cylburn does not impact on our meetings, we will return to our usual location at the Cylburn Arboretum Mansion House.
Speaker of the Month: Following a brief business meeting the guest speaker will be introduced. We are delighted to have Mark Nettleship address the club. He is a Landscape Designer with The Porter Landscaping Company. Since this is the time of the year when we contemplate a spring gardening project, he will be talking about how to get your next project underway. He will discuss the elements of a good design, the do's and the do nots, fertilizing, shearing & pruning.

Lawns--If you overseeded your permanent lawn with ryegrass in fall, fertilize with 3 pounds of 15-0-15 fertilizer per 1,000 square feet. If you didn't overseed, there's still time to green up areas of your lawn. With a spreader, broadcast 10 pounds of ryegrass seeds per 1,000 square feet. To cover bare areas, use at a little heavier rate.
